what a circle means

Is mental math something you can dramatically improve at with practice, or is it somewhat ingrained like reading speed and digit span? If it can be improved, this seems like a problem for intelligence tests, since a lot of the require mental math yet supposedly can't be coached.

Mental math can definitely be improved. First improve short term memory to expand the number of digits you can hold at once. Then learn a bunch of tricks for mental arithmetic.

It has no bearing on IQ at all.

Sometimes I think that people with exceptionally high IQ like John von Neumann or Terence Tao, who have a very fast mental calculation ability aren't just born with it, they had to train their brilliant minds to do it at some point of their childhood, and then they did it very well of course.
