I saw a stats thread and wanted to talk more about applied stats and its uses irl. I've personally been reading a lot about Data Science and the huge paychecks it gives for (relatively) simple work (basically an intersection of comp.sci, stats, data warehousing/cleaning, and engineering). I'm a stats major with an internship this summer in data science (more programming heavy since my background lacks that) and wanted input.

Is Data Science a meme career? Anyone here did applied stats/data science?

Also, comments on deep learning/machine learning? How difficult is it to fully grasp and utilize?

Just getting into machine learning (and I mean barely scratching the surface) and it's already fascinating. The higher-up stuff is fucking genius.

I only read one introductory book on machine learning so far, but how difficult it gets highly depends on what you want to do with it.

You can treat machine learning algorithms just like most scientists treat statistics: As a tool you kind of understand but not really. Just by reading this simple 600 page book, I am perfectly able to apply the algorithms to data, draw the right conclusions and evaluate the models. BUT I have absolutely no idea what's going on behind the curtains, which might lead to some pitfalls (like retard psychologists misinterpreting the p-value).

I am trying to get there, but I got a long way to go since I have very limited programming experience.

Any book recommendations? What's your background?

I am currently doing a social science + statistics bachelors degree. Planning on doing a masters degree in survey stats.

If you have any experience in R or plan on learning it, I'd recommend "Machine Learning with R" by Brett Lantz. It's the only thing I read on this topic so far so might not be the best book, but I feel like I learnt a lot.

I have a lot of experience with R actually, but I was planning my transition into python-based programming. Idk if thats more useful but it seems to be the language more people use in the industry.

That's a cool masters. What do you plan on doing? Designing experiments? I'm taking a sampling class next semester, should be cool.

I'm doing math + physics bachelors, only prior experience was with basic statistical analysis, basic probability, and introductory Python. I'm currently taking a data mining course and they're teaching it in Python. I don't know the advanced shit but it's really fucking cool.

Plus the career opportunities are great for data science/analysis these days. NSA and other US Intelligence agencies for example hire a shit ton of math and CS people, and if you don't want to work for the government there are plenty of private companies who occasionally get contracts with the IC.

it is a meme to make 'statistics' sound sexy, other than that; I'd say go for it, you'll actually learn something useful (you can apply machine learning to sort your porn for instance)

nick you in this thread boi

that project coming along?

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
