That was a long term goal. Even if Buran hadn't got the axe I doubt it would have happened anymore than some of the proposed shuttle upgrades. And even with the flyback boosters the main engines were disposable.

I often wondered that myself, maybe I am wrong but it looks like to me Aesthetics arise from a correct perception of objects with good functionality designs. Maybe Aesthetics are tied up with mathematics at a fundamental level and some of us can perceive it's beauty without understanding the complexity of it.
