Micro master race.
My first PCR experience was a 4k BP fruit fly gene.
Then we did PilE for an experiment and the difference in time taken was astonishing.

I worked in a micro/molecular lab as a researcher/"instructor" for new researchers, about to get my B.S. for microbio what do you want to know?

also anything you wish you'd know earlier? trying to get as much of a decent start as I can, starting uni late as fuck (20 now, starting next year) hopefully in edinburgh/manchester or any top 50 biosciences unis really.

UCSB, I don't really view it as good/bad, I just view it as someplace that will give me credentials/knowledge for a job.

advice would probably be to get into research ASAP, professors/PIs prefer earlier students because they will stick with the school for longer. As for books, no idea. I wouldn't recommend books but if you know what your research subject is on maybe brush up on the basic and look up recent scientific literature on the subject.

like I said, start ASAP.

20/21 isn't really late, there are people in their 30s getting bachelors in science classes. I wouldn't get to hung up on the whole top 10/50/whatever. If it means anything, UCSB is rated "top 50" worldwide but I don't think my career would be all that different at almost any other UC. Don't know If I can say the same about UK though I'm not too familiar.

How can you work in a lab? Even if you could somehow fit into that breed of dog, it would be much too cramped to actually get any work done........
