very arguable, to my knowledge algebraic geometers publish in string theory, there is some bleed over with TQFT, etc. But most physicists, most high energy physicists, don't really give a shit about that sort of thing. Even witten, by his own admission, is not exceptionally knowledgeable in rigorous algebraic approaches to the work he specializes in.

Grothendieck is the father of modern algebraic geometry

he is the man that really pushed mathematics into the abstract
