Powerpoint is fine but it is certainly nothing substantial enough to raise the bar and I think that's the issue. We are content with okay, it will never go away, so long as we support mediocre software and their companies.

hell, boy, in science, you can use litrely any software you like. any, as long as you do something excellent and/or relevant with it. but for your presentations, just use powerpoint. sad but true.

Honestly it is complicated to use at first, but once you learn how to use it you can make some great looking presentations.

Use graphviz for graphs, which you can then import into your presentation.

Learn about good typography: practicaltypography.com

I recommend using a sans-serif typeface for your presentations, due to the non-text-heavy persona of them. Source Sans Pro, TeX Gyre Heros, Fira Sans, and other quality typefaces are all good choices, depending on the formality of your presentation.

What kind of "biological structures?" Proteins? Gene maps?

It's not about the software but how you use it. Stop using red text on black backgrounds and yellow text on white backgrounds. Don't just put your entire speel as huge paragraphs on slides but have bullet point summaries and key lines. Label your graphs and don't have huge tables of data. etc
