It's basically a giant fuel depot that might also have the ability to make vehicle components (ie anything out of steel). This is so because the Moon has low gravity with no atmosphere, allowing things to be easily put into orbit around it. NASA also thinks a Lunar space elevator is feasible with modern materials, and such a thing would easily make the Moon the place where interplanetary rockets are made.

Only issue is that the value of the Moon isn't really unlocked until we start building massive spaceships or cargo for spaceships that go on other planets which is probably a thing that won't happen within our lifetimes except maybe as a proof-of-concept.
