Nothing.

Space as we know it is quantum fluctuations, the ether, whatever you want to call it. It has a volume.

True empty space is nothing - no energy, no mass, no length, no volume. If the universe is a ball of ether, then true empty space is what is outside of that, but it can't be described because it is nothing.
