Is the production of solar panels more environmentally polluting than oil/gas?
I'm not finding a compounded report on comparing the total effect of mining/processing crystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, cadmium tellurium, copper indium gallium diselenide, silver, tellurium and indium. Or the materials used for the batteries, lithium, etc.
But I'd bet if you could compile it all, it would dwarf oil/gas
Solar and Lithium Ion battery production also has a significant amount of waste but that can be disposed off safely unlike Oil/Gas which is released into the atmosphere.

After strip mining the metals, we require a toxic processing plant to separate

Nothing beats black flammable goo seeping out of the ground or ever will but if you got better ideas there is a huge market of self hating, virtue signaling black goo consumers.

the truth is that most electricity (just like most cars) is not needed and just luxury.
but companies can make money selling these useless luxuries. that's why this "debate" even exists.
thats why our planet is being shit up.
rip animals, bees and fish. they never had a chance

It certainly required oil/gas to produce them; with slave labor thrown in. Most people never see all the required processing and manufacturing of materials they require. There's all the supporting manufacturing. There is damage to environment. It all adds up.
