The Christian Church was the only unifying force in Europe after the fall of Rome. It was the only centralized institution which could impose authority on the feudal kings, if it hadn't been there Europe would've fallen into a worse dark age and barbarianism, and probably would've been conquered by Islam.

This modern age couldn't have happened without the dark ages.
