Why are you just finding this out now? Shouldn't you have already published at least one paper on the same topic as your thesis before you started it, and thus already have an idea about what the results will be?

What field? I know it's not always an option, but I try to pick projects where a negative result is also useful, but it really varies from field to field whether that is useful (and it doesn't feel like a contribution which kinda sucks)
