He has a shit band, but he's most famous for pioneering a brand of submission grappling that eschews the use of the gi (the judo uniform), claiming it is better tailored to MMA and self defence. He is an advocate for legalising recreational marijuana, claiming it improves his grappling.

His rubber guard system at some points had a large following, and was used at high level in the UFC, most notably by BJ Penn. However, it fell out of favour, giving lie to his prediction that the new generation of grapplers coming through would adopt his techniques.

I was one of the guys that thought his stuff was revolutionary at first, but then became disillusioned. I wouldnt argue with him though, but its notable that very few high level grapplers use rubber guard, and I can't recall ever seeing a twister submission in the UFC.
