I have some really dirty sodium acetate, if I dissolve it in a minimal amount of water and then pour acetone (sodium acetate isn't soluble in it) will it fall out of solution as pure crystals? Is this a good method for purifying it?
pls respond
Use as little as possible hot water to solve everything. Cool off, wait for crystalization. Remove excess water/filter. Repeat if needed. Acetone might work as well. But remember that aceton is watersoluable.
You can also try washing off the impurities using only acetone.

i will try this, thanks!

what impurities?
wash the dry sodium acetate with polar and non-polar solvents like acetone and hexane/toluene and see what colour the crystals are?
if still brown dissolve in a minimum amount of hot water and recrystallize

>what impurities?
i don't know, i got it from vinegar and baking soda
Buchner funnel and acetone wash. Why do you assume the impurities arent soluble in acetone?

If you wash with acetone only, here are a couple tips :
>Dry the acetone with epsom salt first (bake epsom salt to remove moisture, add to acetone (after salt cools), shake for a while, then filter the salt out)
>crush the sodium acetate into a fine powder in a mortar/pestle to make the process more thorough

okay thanks
yeah its easy, wash with bleach and it will bond with the acetate. then add ammonia and stir well, the bonded sodium acetate will fall out of solution in a few minutes of stirring

There's always one in every chemistry thread

sadly i can't do that, i've used all my bleach and ammonia to make some beautiful crystals :^)
