i come into work at around 8:30. i drink my coffee and read the news till around 10. then i make some phone calls and answer emails for about an hour and then i go to lunch for a minimum of 90 minutes. i live close to work, so i often go home to fuck my wife and take a nap during this time. i do all my actual work in a few hours in the late afternoon, which mostly consists of spreadsheets and paperwork. i will always spend the last 45 minutes of the day working on personal projects and will walk out the door no later than 4:50 in the afternoon.

for this i get paid 80k$ a year with great benefits.

GPA is everything. don't let anyone here tell you differently. its better to just get one degree with a good GPA than to try for a double major and get an okay GPA.

baby your GPA to the point of dropping classes and extending your graduation date if you have to. don't burn out or overload. set your ambitions on a getting into a good grad school.
>>
>>8707881
that's bullshit. i had a 3.9 in mechanical engineering and couldn't find a job.
>>
>>8707885
you're just too autistic then
>>
>>8707881

Actually kind of false

I'm not sure if its publicly available but one of my sociology teachers posted a study by one of his GTA's that showed negligible call-back rates (for job applications) between a B+ and an A average student
>>
>>8707885
your 3.9 is getting your resume in the door. you don't even make it past the computer if its less than 3.5 for most positions.
>>
>>8707904
my overall point was that its better to get a great GPA by going slow and chewing a little bit at a time than it is to go HAM and try to cram 18 credits per semester on a double major program and potentially fucking yourself.
>>
>>8707912

That's true, unless you have a specialized career path in mind where you'd be maxing your potential with both degrees
>>
>>8707917
there is nothing a double major is going to give you that grad school won't imo. with the amount of work you have to do for a double BS, you can just get the damn MS. i can understand if school is just a breeze for you, but if you actually have to exert yourself in college then double majors just don't make sense to me.
>>
>>8707922

>>
>>8708047
you have a 3.9 gpa in ME and applied to over 100 positions, and got nothing?

i dont believe you
>>
>>8708056
it's true. granted that i graduated in 2013 so the market was worse than it supposedly is now, but it's true. i didn't have internships, but i did undergraduate research so it's not like my resume was bare either.

i honestly think that one of the biggest things that worked against me is that i'm a white immigrant from a non-english speaking country. i didn't fit in with the good old boys' club, and due to being white i didn't qualify as a """diversity""" hire either. i'm seeing the same thing in grad school. scholarships/fellowships for worse performing students in better financial standing than me simply because their skin is darker than mine.

i might just move out of the US after grad school, because i'm tired of being denied opportunities due to my background and the color of my skin.

yeah, that's why i originally said that the "GPA is everything" advice is bullshit. i used to believe it, until it came time to find a job and i realized just how wrong i was.

also, speaking realistically here, internships are fuck all in terms of "real-world experience." i talked to some of my peers about what they did in their internships, and quite frankly i got more out of undergraduate research than they did from their internships. however, in reality, it's as you said internships trump undergrad research.

I simply applied for a job for which I had all the qualifications.

So simply focus on learning the most modern tools that companies will be using: visual studio, C#, Java, etc. and then look for job openings and start playing programmer bingo. Then send your resume to the companies for which you have all or most of the requirements.

Yes, this implies a lot of self study.
>>
>>8708160
Recruitment is all sorts of fucked up. Doesn't matter you lose sleep over extracurricular projects, hiring prefers the guy who "worked" at a company because they know what "work" is supposed to be like even if all they did was install Joomla plugins.

>>8708167
So why the fuck do people complain about immigrants again.
>>
>>8708173
how many jobs did you apply to?
i have C, C++ and Java down for the big business stacks and I'm getting JS down before i pick a framework for hippier companies (and i have other scripting and logic languages). i'm not getting many hits.
it's been over a year since i graduated and i'm getting concerned i have little time left to "study" before no one wants me at all
>>
>>8708181
>how many jobs did you apply to?

Just 1, this company. That said, I interned for this company while still a student and I did many months of literal unpaid work while juggling my studies. That is why I got a job immediately, I already had the connection that I earned through slavery.

>C, C++ and Java
Coincidentally I also know these languages and the work I do is so far away from them it is a bit ridiculous. I think that the only people who get to do work in C are actual computer engineers so going to JS is a good move but again I repeat, C#.

Civil is in a boom period, at least here in the US.

Do you enjoy it? It seems interesting to me but I couldnt get the hang of coding in VHDL. Might take a couple more courses on it tho.

It's not a protected term, so anyone can call themselves a physicist. You might call people who work in physics actual physicists, but in this case, I've heard actul physicists refer to physics grads as physicists. There's no point at which you become a "physicist"; maybe you had an undergraduate degree in physics and did a PhD in chemistry, and now you work in materials science... Are you a physicists or a chemist? Does the distinction even matter? Certainly for the point:
>Many physicists do fine after graduation though.
It does not matter, as it is clear what is meant.

I have a question I'm not sure if anyone here would be able to answer.

How important is it to have a degree that matches the work you'll be doing? Like, if I were to have a degree in neuroscience or bioinformatics, would I be at a disadvantage trying to get a basic field ecology job compared to someone with a degree in environmental science or ecology, even though the first 2 degrees are more prestigious?

Basically I don't want to box myself into either a degree that's not prestigious enough (environmental science) or one that's too specific (neuroscience) to find work in other fields when I'm equally mixed on which to pursue.
>>
>>8723243
>not prestigious enough
You need to take a break from /sci/.
>>
>>8723246
The funny thing is, this is probably my 4th time coming here in 4-5 years, and maybe my 3rd post ever. I hear the focus on prestige a lot from other bio majors who blame their lack of employability on having too easy or too general of a degree, and it's gotten to me.

I'm paying for my education out of pocket, so my biggest concern is being 50-60k in the hole with a degree that either has shit jobs, or no jobs at all, and no possibility of exploring other related fields.

I want to play together well with all the different people there - a fairly diverse bunch - and so it seems reasonable to try and understand their motivations and dedications. But I don't want to take the colleague profiling too far also.

It wasn't about effort or grades, I just didn't want to become a doctor and then hate it the rest of my life, and I saw that coming on pretty quickly. Scariest decision I have ever made but I have no regrets even though I am still trying to piece together a new plan.

Did you think you'd love it going into med school, or were you already having doubts?

I had the blind confidence of someone who had achieved most everything I had set out to do despite a lot of hurdles. Medicine just had a largely different attitude towards learning than science, and so did the other students. Working for a vet anatomy lab I noticed the same exact attitude in vet students. A lot of narcissism. I kind of like the idea of a military environment that pushes teamwork and crushes anyone's narcissism in basic training.

but to more directly answer your question, I wanted to get an MD and apply it to my background in genetic engineering (synth bio) for specific research purposes. It was just another step I had to take. I wasn't one of those kids who say they were born to be a doctor, it was something I wanted to do and thought I had to do.

but how can you go into higher education without firmly having decided what you want to do? maybe its cause im a europoor, but i couldnt never understand how you can make a 30k per semester kind of decision so lightly

Part of being a senior in research science and working part time on top of it leaves you very little time to reflect on your life plans you made years ago and have followed through with. It was the logical next step in a career but it didn't work out. You can't ruminate on every decision and outcome you've ever made in your life.

>medschool is the logical next step

no? you could have gotten a phd, there's no reason to get an m.d. unless you very specifically want to be a physician. Not judging you or anything, just really seems weird from my pov

wanted to get into gene therapy as a physician. Realized I would probably just treat fat people for diabetes. This was also when Obamacare was being pushed through and doctors everywhere were getting fucked in the ass. The school I was in temporarily lost accreditation the next year. My grandpa fell apart from Alzheimer's. I got shingles. My hand was mysteriously paralyzed for 6 months during the time I was in med school.

There was a lot going on, not that it is an excuse for quitting. I just hated it. Also nothing interested me enough for a phd.

higher education in US is horribly over saturated as it is, chasing degrees doesn't make a lot of sense unless there is something independent you can do with it. I learned enough from my last job to start an anatomy business and am working on the business model but if that falls through it's military for me.

I tried to crawl back to uni so hard after I graduated. Nothing I could find. The lab I just did research from got their funding cut and with the amount of undergrads clamoring to do their thesis out of there, they wouldn't let me back even if I offered to take out the trash for free.

I think we all forget that uni is an investment in knowledge and all, but investments do not come with out risk. I did a lot of things right butni also did somethings horribly wrong and I payed for them for a while. I love the field I studied and got back in touch with an advisor I lost contact with a few years ago. I told him I'm ready to resume my path towards physicianship and he promised me I could get in. So things are looking up for me now.

As for most others, the only way uni is going to take care of you is if you go back for a graduate degree. The only way out is through.

holy shit are you me

I graduated with my MS in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on nanoscale heat transfer and I ended up working for a satellite company in palo alto

I got an interview with space x comming up even though I wanted to get into JPL. I already know If I get this job I'll get fucked from the work-life balance but I don't care, I just want to be happy again.

I really miss nanotechnology
