I'm afraid not :/ Are you in prepa or uni ? If it helps, I do know that one of my prepa classmates managed to get an auditeur spot in the CS department without having done an MP* and without having exceptional grades (I guess he was in the better half of his MP, without being especially well ranked).
>>
>>8687759
I'm finishing my licence, I don't have a CPGE background but I do have pretty good grades (for what it's worth anyways). I take it your friend didn't ever take the normalien entrance exam?
>>
>>8687797
He took it in the math-info section, for the heck of it. To his surprise, he actually got the admissibility but then didn't make it on the second stage. That being said, I don't think admissibility makes that much of a difference, some auditeurs weren't even admissible but had some solid grades and motivation.
I think if you have done projects in the past or something that shows your interest in the subject, it could make up for it. The ENS (but perhaps most specifically the CS department) are interested in unusual profiles.

That is the name of the course for anyone doing a natural science (biology, chemistry, physics etc.) at Cambridge. First year you take 4 subjects, one of which is mathematics, and during later years you narrow your field.

I think I'm gonna abandon theoretical physics dreams alltogether considering the places are extremely limited and I don't think I'm willing to work hard enough for it
>>
>>8690288
Apparently not. Accommodation costs about £4k per year and it's also guaranteed for 3 years (woop! no apartment hunting after one year). Can't wait to start, but there is something nagging me about not doing maths, although physics will probably suit me better in the long run (could go into research OR engineering OR compsci, etc). What did you study at Imperial? They have incredible maths and physics departments when I visited.
>>
>>8690307
and by places I mean funded PhDs
>>
>>8690311

>>
>>8690310
Physics
I think Oxbridge is more valuable on your CV than Imperial especially outside of UK and in industry.
>>
>>8690317
Yeah, Cambridge is probably better for pursuing a career in physics, but going to Imperial gives you a leg up if you want to get into investment banking, apparently. Are you going to get a PhD?
>>
>>8689642
I hope you don't enjoy analysis. Because UVA apparently doesn't really have anyone who does analysis in their math PhD program.
>>
>>8690272

Not really. For example, if you do Physics then by second year you can do only Physics and Maths if you so desire. Even during first year half of your courses are physics and maths which you'd need to do anyway, and the other half are other science subjects.

Further, there aren't any US-style humanities or general education courses that you'd need to do.
>>
>>8690333
Ye but nothing too theoretical/useless. Will try nanoscience/materials/quantum engineering. Backup plan is finding a career in managment consultacy/banking but the competition is insane.
>>
>>8690350

That's awful. Although it's easy to see the issue when you've invested 3+ years of hard work and £30k+ of debt and get shitty results out of it.

>implying it is the obvious choice to go for quality over renown

man fuck everyone who keeps spouting this holier than thou mentality and how i'm some vapid child who goes for renown and fame instead of quality like a wise well adjusted adult. fuck off and kys. have you ever seen that study where they compared double blind review process with single blind review process and in the single blind process there were signifcantly more papers accepted from famous labs? it's not that easy to turn down CMU but anyone can turn down university of maryshit for made up reasons. then all your future career and prospects. if you have CMU you get a lot more opportunities and chances than having a second tier university. i go to a famous university and i often get emails where the recruiter openly says that they only hire from big names.

anyway, point is. the choice is not that easy

No, everyone else works extremely hard. This course is notoriously difficult and goes by the nickname "Väggen" (The Wall). Over 60% of those that took the last exam failed it.

Living systems, network theory, taxonomy, lots and lots of all things ecology/evolution. Biosemiotics theoretical biology and ecology.
That's what I've studied the most, for most of my life, been compulsively studying biology since before I could read. Went to UCSB as a bio major, dropped out and started a farm where is study and apply myself most of my time. Learning a lot and I'm getting things done, just now got where I can start to build a proper lab, I've been doing a lot of field aquatic biology/mycology and am experimenting with the biodiveristy available to me. Not having a peer group is some suc, but hopefully that will change when I get the grants to hire credentialed scientists/ start publishing.
I also into bunches of philosophy and other fun things, I'm one of those information junkies

Yes, it's valuable as fuck (2nd best "engineering" school in France " and the degree is relatively easy to get, getting there is 80% of the work, if you're taken then I don't think you have to worry about much.

Centrale or Supelec? Don't give the wrong answer
>>
>>8699294
Centrale Paris'diploma is more valuable than Supelec, Supelec is more valuable than the other Centrale (Nantes/Lion/Lille/Marseille)
Both are relatively on the same order of difficulty regarding the courses though, through its harder to get in Centrale Paris than Supelec.
>>
>>8699304
I mean, what school are you in?
>>
>>8699309
I'm in Supelec because I was expecting more EE oriented degree and wanted to take it easy, ended up with partials every 2 months and an half instead of 5 so bad call from me here.

If you were wondering, I am, and most of the student are as well, against the fusion that is taking place between the two schools.

Opinions ?
>>
Btw i am:

>>8699486
>>8697157
>>8696667
>>
>>8699486
>>8699491
The gender ratio will always be 1/10 in French grandes écoles.
If you go for centrale though, you'll have a better campus life though for sure, since the campus will be shared a a few other economy schools starting next year, IE more cuties and golden youth parties ,and you won't have the military on your assistance all day (keep in mind that Polytechnique is a military school)

As for you, if you want a better resume, not by much but still, yeah it's better to go in Polytechnique.
Also, if you want to start working in a military environment, Polytechnique is also the way to go.

As for people themselves, both are going great to be insufferable elitist asshole, but Polytechnique students are WAAAAY worse than centrale folks in that regard.

Make your choice.

Edinburgh is the safe option,
Depends how good and well known the data science course is at Warwick.

Bristol = poop

>>
>>8699722

idk what you mean by shit all over, but honestly I wouldn't have come here if I didn't get into CS.
the CS kids easily get internships and stuff, but some of my ECE friends are better at theoretical stuff than my CS friends.

If you're coming to transfer, you have to have a GPA about a half point above the average to transfer in, so if you didn't get in the first time, you probably won't the second time.

Also if you're in Dietrich you'll be behind the CS kids most likely, so they'll shit on you in that sense.
