Hello everyone, I passed Calculus 1 with a solid C, and now I'm struggling in Calculus 2. I took a test on Chapter 7 from the Stewart book (Integration by parts, trig substitution, partial fraction decomposition, improper integrals, and general random methods of integration) and I know I bombed. I studied hard, too. How can a brainlet like myself hope to get up to speed? I'm still going to go to class and do my best, but I have no idea how some people can just look at this stuff and "get it" after about a half-hour of reading a chapter. Any Calculus survival tips?

Do more practice problems. If you can't quite get a concept from the book, look to outside resources:

How are you studying? If you're looking over notes and highlighting key points, then off yourself.

If you're doing continuous problems that both assigned and not assigned and still managing to get a C, you should also off yourself.

In brainlet maths such as calc 1 and calc 2, you're either right or you're not. And when you're not, you do everything to make it right. Simple.

You're having trouble now because math in American high schools is a joke. Just put more time (solving problems) than the other guys who received a decent education for the time being and eventually you'll get up to speed.

WOW Thank you for these links!! I will definitely look through them and follow along.

I use Studypug and I do some of the problems in the book, but admittedly not all of them. My problem is that they take me so long to do, because I get so many of them wrong. I have tons of scratch paper of fucked-up integral problems. It's perpetually stressful catch-up mode. I do feel as though I'm getting more accurate, but it's slowly and I'm still not where I want to be.

I'm certainly more NOT right than right at this point. What happens is I'll start a problem, I'll get midway though, then I'm stuck. Subsequently, I either WolframAlpha it or look up how to do it on youtube. I then follow the steps, but as soon as I feel I have it the same thing happens with the next problem. This probably has to do with the fact that I got a C in Calc 1 as well. I'm just getting used to seeing immediate trig identities/derivatives/integrals and being comfortable with them as well.

Yeah there might be something to that; pretty much everyone in class is Asian but the teacher and me.

Find an engineer to tutor you.

>>8679773
lol are you me?
>>
>take lessons from mit ocw
>do stewart
>grab some questions from your uni's database
>do it

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?
>>
>>8679773
I was in literally the same boat as you. Got a C in Calc 1. I struggled with Calc 2 early on as well. I was just trying to get by on the assigned HW and studying with my notes. Truth is, you just have to bare down and do the extra work and take the harder problems you don't understand to office hours. I would take problems that I knew how to do and practice them until my hand was numb, just so I could memorize the process. Get good as recognizing trig patterns also.

And get the ship right quick because you have series towards the middle and end of the semester and it'll really bend you over and ram it in without lube, especially if you are struggling with the stuff now.

There are no "tips" or "secrets". Some people just understand math. You and I are not those people, so you just gotta do so many problems that it gets pounded into your head like Mandingo pounding Riley Reid.
>>
Wait wtf. I did everything you listed in parenthesis in Calc 1 (technically analysis 1). Are there differences this deep in exams across universities/ countries?
>>
>>8679773
A in calc1, then C in calc2 cos i spent about 3 hours a month on it and its hard
>>
>>8679773
That looks more like an F-hole on a violin than the integral sign.
>>
In general your grades will drop. If you got a c in calc 1 you will probably fall calc 2
>>
>>8680502
pretty sure the 8th edition of the book has a picture of an instrument with the f hole outlined so i think that's the point
>>
>>8680509
this

however good u were in calc 1 ur gunna be quite a bit worse in calc 2 if ur just an average joe
>>
>>8680540
Fair enough.
>>
You probably need to retake calculus 1, desu. Since you only got a C you should have been reviewing the whole summer, essentially relearning the material. Calculus 2 integration depends heavily on you knowing derivatives like the back of your hand, and that's the easy part.

If you insist on staying in you can probably slide by with another C, but it's going to take a lot of work. Series are generally considered the "hard" part of calc 2, but luckily for you don't build too much on previous calc 1 knowledge beyond what a summation is.
>>
>>8679871
you need to identify your core misunderstanding.

are you having trouble grasping calculus, or are you shit at doing the arithmetic involved in solving calculus problems?

for me it was the latter. and i worked my ass through Basic Mathematics by serge lang in a week and got an A in maths c

As funny as it sounds, I feel as though I have the calculus down but my arithmetic and knowledge of trig is shit. I basically know and understand all of the calc formulas, and could easily write them all down right now from memory. I can even visualize what goes on in my head, but I just make so many stupid math mistakes. One of the reasons may be that I, for some reason, tested into a higher math class than I should have early on before calc.

>>8680227
Yes.

>>8680348
From what I understand, the line between calculus 1 and 2 is completely arbitrary. Some even start the concept of Riemann sums in calculus 2, which I think is ludicrous.

>>8680237
Trust me, I'd love to be the type of person that could do this that easily but then I have that brainlet problem. Also, stupidly not reviewing calc 1 between semesters.

>>8680651
I'd love to slide by with another C. My grade right now is probably a solid D but I'm willing to put the hours in to bring it up. I'm going to hammer at this every day.

>>8679940
I found out that our school has tutoring that I have not yet utilized, so I'll do that as well.

>>8680255
Thank you for letting me know! I'm glad you got through it. It's tough, but I'll take your advice and study my ass off every day. It's good to see people who were in my situation that got through it!

Luckily right now we started dissecting solid shapes, which I find to be pretty neat.

Thank you for the replies so far.
