Hey /sci/,
I'm really interested in astronomy and I want to buy my first telescope soon. Any recommendations?

>pic related, I heard it's quite good for beginners

Yeah it seems good
Install
http://www.stellarium.org/
And plug in the scopes data, get some quality eyepieces too
I dislike altazimuth mounts personally, but with a tube that size you really don't have much of a choice.
IT should be a good beginners scope, enjoy it OP

Generally:
1) If you don't know the sky, get binoculars and a book to learn constellations. Otherwise, you won't have a clue where to look. Also, binocs can be used for terrestrial viewing. Make sure it has a threaded hole for accepting a tripod adapter. Mounting binocs on a tripod turn them into a completely different set of optics.
2) Find a local astronomy club or web site and lurk. Forget 4Chan for this quest.
3) If 4 inches or less, buy a refractor. Larger, a reflector.
4) Make sure it is designed to use 1ΒΌ"
eyepieces.

This!

As an added bonus: A compact refractor telescope or astronomical binoculars are very easy to use and not require setup time.
That means you can use such a telescope whenever you feel like having a quick look at the sky.
Most amateur astronomers start with a compact refractor and use it for many years, because they are just so damn practical.

Astronomy is for autists who failed physics.

If you want to look at stars just look at math, it will give you 10x more insight.

I used to have a 4.5" Meade. Wish I'd gone for a 6" since that's when the quality actually starts.

Looks solid to me as a first telescope. It's generally recommended that you buy a pair of binoculars first and get to know the sky. Assuming you've already gone through those first few steps, that telescope looks good for you.

Craigslist. It's insane how many people buy telescopes in the city and sell them because they realize they can't see shit with all the lights.

I got pic related for 300 bucks flat from some guy in Chicago.

Keep an eye on the telescope section for a while and a really good deal will pop up. You'll save yourself a shite ton of money.

Not sure how that's a deal. OP's pic of the identical model is a buck cheaper.

Retard.

The model I posted is clearly bigger. It's the Orion XT 10, which went for close to 900 retail all together when I bought it.
