Plus there's positioning involved. That midnight snack will stick in you longer, simply because you're laying down straight afterwards.

Different foods can take anywhere from 1 hour to 16 hours (or more) to work through your system, discounting trace heavy metals and such. Each Meal in the developed world tend to involve a rather wide variety of consistencies, so while you're probably getting most of breakfast out before dinner, there's probably still some of the previous day's breakfast mixed in with dinner come morning.
