Is Linear Algebra THE way to go if you want to do a PhD but don't want to be in academia afterwards?

Linear algebra has a wide variety of applications in easily applied fields.

Is there any other field in math that is also easily applicable to the real world?

I want to keep my door open to work in R&D at all kinds of firms so I want to take a Math focused PhD but I don't want to do it in Prob&Stats.

-----------------------

Sidenote: I'm not in the US. From what I've seen about 2/5 of R&D employees and 100% of R&D employees doing R&D have a Ph.D so I NEED a Ph.D. Also for job security and climbing the corporate ladder later on.

What?
>>
>>8663055

I'm asking if it is the most easily applicable line of research if I want to get an R&D job after finishing my Ph.D

If you want something easy you should go into number theory.
>>
>>8663105

Number Theory is the absolute last thing I'd do.

Pathetic attempt at trolling.

I would say that linear algebra, numerical analysis, differential equations (odes and pdes), graph theory ***, number theory, topology -- it's all good shit. Don't worry about what will be applicable in the real world and just do the math you like. You can make it work.

Exactly. Not very many people study math because they expect to get rich off of it. They study math because they enjoy doing math.

It's very simple. Google the jobs you have in mind. Check the requirements. Is it Linear Algebra? Use your brain. Find your own pathway.
>>
Also, if you're in undergrad majoring in math, you're going to spend 4 years learning broad strokes and getting experience in a lot of different fields. You'll figure it out by the time you graduate
>>
I work in R&D.

Mathematics is the wrong way to go if this is what you want to do. If you go for maths anyway, do statistics. The office I work in has about 200 people. 2 of them are mathematicians. Both specialised in stats.

You want R&D, do physics.

What about R&D like Bell Labs?
>>
>>8663299
No idea. I imagine they would have a handful of mathematicians, but the turnover would be so low that there will probably never be a vacancy. The two mathematicians that work with me are about 60 and been with the company forever. I don't think they're looking to replace them, they want physicists. There's very little that mathematicians offer most R&D labs outside statistics that a physicist couldn't do.

>>8663296
While you're here how available are r&d jobs?
>>
>>8663042
linear algebra is a very deep field in modern mathematics (many people do not actually realize this fact)

you will not be able to make it academia studying any topic without at minimum masters. PhD is the only way to get a consistent pay
>>
>>8663326
Very if you have the right skills. I did a summer placement in my final year and they keep emailing me asking me to come back because they're short staffed. Was a good company too.
>>
>>8663333
What field of physics did you study in?
>>
>>8663341
Photonics. Massively under-saturated job market.
