I believe that attractiveness lowers a person's inclination to develop their personality and intellect, especially among women, so yes, ugly people are more likely to study more difficult topics.
There are plenty of attractive people in engineering fields though, and they generally fall under two categories: A - socially inept, and B - super egomaniac ...and every now and then there's someone who could be a 'cool kid' if they wanted but chooses not to

First graph is rating professors on attractiveness by students. The second and third are rating attractiveness of students by students.

The take away was that males had a slight positive correlation with attractiveness and IQ/profession. Females on the other hand were inverse.

Professors in STEM subjects ranked lower on attractiveness due to lack of relatability or looks.
