My understanding is that msg is approximately as healthy as salt. In the 50's they started realizing that salt might be unhealthy for the first time. There may have been an overreaction and people cut back salt dramatically. Then msg came out and people thought it was some kind of magical flavoring that tasted like salt but it wasn't salt so there were no negative health effects, right? Well actually it basically has the same health effect.
