Can any /sci/entists confirm or deny that Autism is primarily genetic?
I'm a grad student in genetics, and most of the "evidence" is more aligned with environmental factors and has been for a loooong time when it comes to autism.
There are links in certain situations that occur to mother while pregnant, abnormalities in utero, toxins and metal exposures, many possibilities but no link to an actual gene that causes autism.
tl;dr no, but for the sake of science you could gather 10,000 autistic men and women, mate them, and create a pedigree of autism and check it's occurrence in their progeny

If you're still here also answer this:
What actually is Autism, aside from just a collection of symptoms where does it originate and what does it affect?

Autism rates rising is caused by increased detection and the definition getting broader.

So like any other disease?
Strong arguments there for a condition that we know nothing about and speculate like we are on wall street.
Simon Baron-Cohen's thesis is that it is a testosterone overflow in utero that causes autism.
Men are predominately more thing-oriented and less social by definition because of testosterone, so it's not a stretch to imagine autism being caused by a too high amount of it.
