>At the Department of Energy, it would roll back funding for nuclear physics and advanced scientific computing research to 2008 levels, eliminate the Office of Electricity, eliminate the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and scrap the Office of Fossil Energy, which focuses on technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

http://thehill.com/policy/finance/314991-trump-team-prepares-dramatic-cuts

Thank you alt right for proving why we as a species are doomed to fail. Time to start learning mandarin if you guys hope to get a research career.
>>
>>8625165
Why do you need them to do the research?
>>
>>8625215

The equipment and materials are very expensive because they are not mass produced and require very niche and expert resources.

My ex worked in a bioengineering lab, and it was very common to write multi-million dollar grant proposals in order to be able to afford buying basic supplies (specialized microscope, chemical supplies, etc.).

If these national organizations cut funding, then there is no money for professors to do research. They won't be able to afford supplies.
>>
>>8625165

Not only will scientists leave the country, but people thinking about studying in America might not be as enticed to do their research in the states.

I am seriously thinking about leaving the country after one or two years. We will see how bad this term gets.
>>
>>8625165
this is so fucked. all so some rig pig or dumb hick can keep his oil job. thanks for setting us back republiCONS, you fucking retards.
>>
>>8625165
Meanwhile, in reality, this just got submitted for approval.

>H.R. 590: Advanced Nuclear Technology Development Act of 2017
>A bill to foster civilian research and development of advanced nuclear energy technologies and enhance the licensing and commercial deployment of such technologies.

They want to push through legislature that will dramatically cut the red tape for private companies funding and building nuclear power and research facilities and make it easier for the private sector to market commercially viable nuclear technology.

There's also a half dozen space and science bills submitted or in the process of submission as of this week.

Don't forget guys, two-thirds of the major research and engineering labs in the country are in red states.
>>
>>8625165
It's more about consolidating than eliminating. Research will still be done, only there won't be 100 departments with 100 department leaders &100's of unnecessary staff which ultimately hampers effective research from being done. We need efficiency.
>>
>>8625250
yeah okay, when he asks for the names of people doing climate research for a stalinist purge I'm a little skeptical that it's just about "reorganizing"

Trump supporters will do any amount of mental gymnastics to justify this shit.
>>
>>8625250
If anything, cutting all the fat and red tape means the actual amount that gets spent on research will either be unchanged or slightly better.
>>
>>8625239
i've seen first hand the """research""" that university labs do and it's dogshit. research done by national labs is far higher quality, and far more cost effective as the labs have technicians on the payroll to service and maintain the expensive equipment, not to mention the equipment itself.
>>
>>8625242
Maybe if we kick a few libtard professors out of our universities there'll be room for more researchers & etc.
>>
>>8625215
The fuck are doing in a /sci/ if you have to ask that question. Research is expensive as fuck and needs to be given a loose leash, if any leash, in order for it to have max potential. Industry work 90% of the time is only focused on minor shit like how can we increase battery life for our phones. Industry tries to minimize risk but the hard fucking truth is some of our biggest accomplishments weren't set in stone shit. It was like crossing an uncharted ocean. Big deal shit like genome editing or fusion has to be goverment funded.
>>
>>8625255
Do we really need four separate, fully staffed offices to deal exclusively with climate change-related regulatory actions?
>>
>>8625261
>Industry work 90% of the time is only focused on minor shit like how can we increase battery life for our phones.
lmao

you're in for a surprise once you graduate high school and see what is actually researched in most university labs.
>>
>>8625258
This this this this. If you really want to make a positive influence on research funding, gut the programs dumping millions into stupid sociology and gender studies """research"""
>>
>>8625264
Do you really expect me to buy that it's just "reorganizing" when Trump and his cabinet have repeatedly stated they do not believe in the theory of AGW?

How naive do you think we are?
>>
>>8625255

>>
>>8625270
Jesus christ what the fuck are you even doing on this board. Go back to your echo chamber /pol/
>>
>>8625258

Most of the professors are researchers. The researchers are required to lecture as part of their position.
>>

>>

>>
>>8625268
How about reacting to what actually happens instead of what you think or expect to happen?

If Trump ends up outright dissolving shit like the EPA, then by all means feel free to lose your shit. But until then it's all just so much "sky is falling" talk.
>>
>>8625257

You have a pretty intense way of wording your opinions.

Well, most grants are not written for the million dollar range. Maybe only some of the best labs.

My ex was doing work for the army core of engineers, so maybe that is why the grants were for a little more $$$.

Not if it doesn't significantly impact the actual research being done.

Again - despite what people are reading into here or assuming he's going to do, all that's been proposed up to this point is consolidating a lot of redundant offices and dead weight, not cutting actual research funding.

Until such time as something like that actually happens - there's no point in losing our collective shit.

No, he's not.

Consolidating a bunch of regulatory offices that all do basically the same shit already is not "defunding national labs" and more than a university laying off a secretary or janitor who works at the physics building is "dissolving the physics department"
>>
Americans need jobs first. Then we can worry about the nuclear physics.

It's the same baseless retarded drivel, over and over and fucking over for years.
It's like if, for some strange reason, everyone in the neighborhood collectively but privately decided to get their dogs to shit on your lawn. Eventually, whenever you catch someone in the act you absolutely lose your shit at the dog owner, in a manner that seems way over the top to them.
It's cumulate.
>>

Just double checked. overwhelming majority of sources, goverment or private ru, all say its around 5%.

For 2015, US expenditure energy and environment made up 1.17%, science 0.78%, and education made up 2.67%. No one is going hungry because those pennies that are going to those small percentages. Literally please fuck off you mental gymnast. You are ruining any hope humanity has of longevity.

it's not an excuse, there is no such thing as making excuses for something that didn't happen.

there's a ton wrong with russia, but most importantly nobody should want their country's leader to have their policy informed solely by the russian government under threat of blackmail.

He's doing too many things too fast, the idea according to the link is to cut the federal budget by 10 trillion in 10 years. But this falls under the assumption that he will be able to successfully stay in the office for 8 years (which is not a guarantee, he can either fail to get re-elected or pass away within those 8 years since he's 70).

So instead of being logical, understanding the fragility of his situation and trying to focus his efforts on one or two major things (i.e. fix healthcare possibly social security and regulate immigration) he is instead jungling multiple issues concerning subjects that arguably neither he nor any of his cabinet are qualified to deal with (i.e. budgets concerning federal research and the logistics of federal labor).

Mind you though, I'm not really surprised. I figured this would happen since he's trying to run the government like a oversized private business but I hope /pol/ and the alt-right can one day learn to appreciate the ramifications that comes about when you elect people like this (i.e. individuals who lack awareness/knowledge of the autonomy of a government as big as the U.S.).

I believe what hes trying to say (or what hes using to prove his reasoning) is that in the absence of competition then there's no point for them to actually try anything, since the incentive (or one of them) for them to do so is apparently some sort of nationalistic belief that drives them to be ahead (or at least on par) with other nations when it comes to scientific progress.

At least that's what I think he means. But I'd disagree. As competition is clearly not the only incentive that comes into this subject.

That is not true, Muslims are already approaching 10% in France, especially when you look at the younger generation. Not only that, but the native French have low birth rates. Furthermore, Muslims have high birth rate, , the tide of migrants aren't stopping, so there will be an additional millions of Muslim migrants in the next decade. A muslim majority in 2100 is not so strange, after all, the US went from over 90% white to 60% white in the span of 60 years.

Haha, I have a PhD in Neuroscience. Why the fuck do you think I mentioned these things? I'm sure you had to Google them judging by the time it took you to reply. Here's another one: The Flynn effect. IQ is steadily increasing across generations.

You know, you leftist faggot. You shouldn't try to overreach, because you'll blow your cover. You should kill yourself, because I am legitimately getting tired of leftists like you. Your actions in the past year have been morally reprehensible, and your ideology is inherently wrong.

Anyway, a dysgenics trend has been seen as early as the 80s by Richard Lynn, and a Icelandic study seems to reconfirm this trend.

Either your didn't read it, or you misunderstood it. Regardless, it's irrelevant. Educational attainment is only a proxy of IQ and the genetic effects this paper highlight are (besides small in absolute and effect size) proxies of educational attainment themselves.

And since you seem to think it's fine to cite news paper articles rather than primary literature, I'll return the favor.
>Average scores on intelligence tests are rising substantially and consistently, all over the world. These gains have been going on for the better part of a century—essentially ever since tests were invented. The rate of gain on standard broad-spectrum IQ tests amounts to three IQ points per decade, and it is even higher on certain specialized measures.

Look up how the DOE was allocated 23 billion in 2013, and then look up how the American black budget for 2012 was close to 60 billion.

Do you really think your ex was the one actually working on shit that mattered? Matter of fact, I have a feeling that the Trump administration is just reallocating the money used by scientists at certain departments, like the department of Energy, and placing it into the hands of scientists which the government knows has the intelligence to get the shit finished ahead of schedule and under budget.

All that you have to do is look at the history of the DOE to understand that it's always been seen as the toilet bowl of departments. The only thing that they're known for is giving away the blueprints to create nuclear weapons. They were formed by Jimmy Carter to regulate energy policy better. They shouldn't even be working on "advanced scientific computing research."

Do you think scientists worth their salt in those fields really want to do research for ARPA-e instead of a place like DARPA or IARPA? To this day, DARPA is probably doing more research in the areas of energy than ARPA-e.
>>

We have to deal with this for two years. In 2018 we'll have our chance to fill Congress with democrats and stymie any further legislation. And of course we can fire his ass in 2020.

If shit gets really bad we can always initiate a coup and depose him but we're gonna need a lot of people who are willing to be potentially arrested or killed. I figure if we can get a mob of at least a few hundred we can storm the white house and overcome secret service and the local law enforcement. Has to be done quick though before national guard and military gets involved. Additionally Pence and as many others as possible in the chain of command need to be taken out as well.

Sure some will inevitably leave, but many of them will come back at some point for sure. Either way, much of the research conducted in many European countries gets funded and shared someway-somehow by the American government.

>>
>>8625380
It's impressive how each sentence of your post managed to be dumber than the previous one
>>
>>8626647
Only because private energy firms have to jump through forty million regulatory hoops to build a fucking nuclear plant.

I'm from Iowa, we've only got a Gen II plant down in Palo, but it's provided over 15% of the state's power for decades (it's taken us 20 years to get our state's wind farms anywhere close to that)

Mid-American was going to build a new Gen IV plant about ten years ago. It would have doubled or even tripled our state's nuclear power capacity and let our state cut it's coal use in half, but all the bureaucratic red tape and bullshit liberal hippie roadblocks killed the project.
>>
>>8626647
When did I speak of anything regarding privatization of the sector? I was just pointing out how it seems that the board members and family of the TVA seem to be losers who bathe in pessimism.

Nobody in the TVA has a crystal ball to indicate whether or not this current administration is going to lay the foundation to over-haul our energy sector by building and retrofitting new nuclear facilities.

This is a bipartisan issue, and Obama couldn't get much done because the Republicans wanted to take the credit for it. It's the sad truth, but it is certainly a fact.
