These teachers think like autistic computers
>>
>>8606325
That must be bullshit...........
>>
>>8606325
i like the 3 stars.
does that imply that it is hard or what ?
>>
>>8606325
Okay now that is simply retarded.
I hate it when teachers are 30 IQ points below their students.
The assumptions should be clearly stated if they're going to be like that...
>>
>>8606337
wtf the task seems normal to me.

This triggers me.

2 boards @ 10 minutes implies 5 min/board
Throwing away her previous work, at 5 min/board, we expect 15 minutes to make 3 boards.
This problem could be worded better though.
>>
>>8606342
You start with a board and it takes 10 minutes to cut it in half.

So every cut takes 10 minutes.
To cut up something into 3 pieces requires 2 cuts.
>>
>>8606355
It takes 10 minute to make 1 cut
Therefore to make 2 cuts, it'd take 20 minutes
>>
>>8606355
10 minutes to saw a board into two pieces.

When you saw a singular object into two pieces, it's done in one motion. So it took 10 minutes to cut through the *one* board once to get *two* pieces. Therefore it would take 20 minutes to cut through the board twice and have three pieces remianing.

So no, that makes no sense whatsoever.
I banish thee to the plane of solitude, where even the lowliest /sci/fags abuse thee's brainlet status.
>>
>>8606325
>>8606372
the issue with this problem is

>It took Marie 10 minutes to saw a board into 2 pieces.

which should be interpreted as, one individual board was cut in half to make two boards. this thick ass piece of wood required strenuous effort from this dyel who managed to make a cut in 10 minutes.

however, what they were trying to say was

>It took Marie 10 minutes to saw 2 pieces off a board.

thus telling the reader that 2 cuts can be made in 10 minutes, leading to the conclusion that 1 cut = 5 minutes

3 pieces of woods = 3 cuts = 15 minutes

I heard off something similar but they awarded the students with phds.
>>
>>8606579

I hear a lot of these horror stories actually. Orphaned PhD students surprisingly seem not incredibly uncommon.

Usually, I don't think the university acts like vultures though. I guess the department was desperate for some cash or something. Strange.
>>
>>8606579
I'm glad that I read through my contract and know what happens to me, my advisors and my funding in different cases.
>>
>>8606657
... And that I have protection from if my advisor quits.
I imagine all UK institutions are the same.
>>
>>8606348

Doesn't change the fact that it's wrong

also they give kids a complex by busting their balls like that from such a young age

If you get 4/6 on such easy shit then you must be really stressed about doing harder math.
>>
>academic horror stories
>all posts are shitposting about kindergarten problems

I wish all you redditors would leave.

>5×3 =/= 3×5
Well, if children are to learn abstract algebra at the appropriate age, one must at some stage, by some means, impress on them the folly of assuming commutativity without proof.
In addition, those arrays look rather Wildbergerian. Did he design this course?
>>
>>8607311
This has nothing to do with commutativity it's about isomorphism between algebra and drawing
>>
>>8607311
It's clearly a dot product you crank

Kek. It just occurred to me that I never stuck with chess because I got screamed at in first grade for playing en passant like it wasn't a legal move.

False, if you're trying to imply that Americans are known for common sense, I will disagree with you.
>>
>>8609146
So what happened after that incident?

Did you give up PhD and find a job? Or continue PhD in similar field? Or something else?
>>
>>8609161
Well, after the abrupt end of my Ph.D. career I applied to vet med. Ok salary and job prospects, and due to my previous studies I can graduate faster than others.

Luckily professor of physiology got interested in my previous projects and studies and sympathized my situation. In his experience vet med students are shitty in doing research, so I was a pleasant surprise to him and he offered me a small job. Now I work in his lab whenever I have spare time, and I can expand this project into a Ph.D. if I want to. Early developmental biology of the brain.
>>
>>8606448
What they were trying to say and what it actually says are two different things though.
