I think it might be because his fifth postulate is a long winded abstract concept pulled out of thin air and with definitions.
Charles Dodgson did a great job defending it in the 19th century but with the advent of technology it's hard to find too many who are willing to defend it.
That isn't to say you don't find them though. Nathaniel Miller wrote a book about Euclid less than ten years ago defending its validity because of the fact that informal systems can be proven using formal systems. I'm reading this book right now. Modern Geometry is fascinating but it hasn't changed too drastically.
