I was -still am, I guess- in a very similar situation. The one thing that has helped more than anything has been working out every day. Also, just spend all your time doing your work. If you are not doing anything distracting and literally just always working towards your degree it's very hard to fail.

Quantum dots are excellent candidates to replace traditional semiconductors, have widely tuneable bandgaps that vary only with size (redux), excellent fluorescence properties, and are highly toxic (Lead, Cadmium).

Problems right now are aforementioned toxicity, fluorescence blinking (just google it), and difficulty of synthesis.
