Which textbook should a beginner get for linear alg? I've read the wiki, but idk if I should get Lay's or Strang's book
I'm on the quarter system and I'm about to take a course called "Matrix Algebra with Applications" (I assume it's just linear algebra?) (syllabus: http://www.math.washington.edu/Undergrad/courses/308/308syl.php)
So far, I've only take Calc 1-3 (we didn't cover green's theorem or gradient planes in calc 3 because quarter system, that other stuff is covered in a different class called "intro to multivariable calc")
btw i'm a statistics major, maybe will double major in cs or math

Make a long list of books and start some of them.
Eventually you'll come to like a few.

They're pretty expensive though

I don't know where you live but here my internet provider does not charge me too much for a 10 mb download. It is probably like 0.0001 cents.
Why is the internet cost so high where you live? I suggest you protest against that. The internet cannot be so expensive so that you cannot afford to download a pdf holy shit that is horrible. What's the internet provider so that we can start a change.org campaign.

That's what I do as well and I'm a physicist.
I start I book and If I don't like it I say fuck off and start another.

The wikia clearly says that Lay and Strang are overpriced ripoffs. Get any Dover Matrix Algebra book:

Someone suggested this a couple days back, I'm going through it

so far it is, I'm just started with this stuff though, so I'm new to all of it. But the pace is good, and the proofs are readable
