These are actually called "terrestrial gamma-ray flashes" and were discovered 20 years ago, in 1994. They're not actually called "dark lightning", it just makes them sound sexier to pop-scientists.

It's a mysterious and poorly-understood form of lightning whose primary salient characteristic is that - in contrast to all other forms of lightning, which involve a bright glowing electrical discharge that is the most obvious signature of lightning - it discharges in an unusual fashion which does not produce light. (Instead, it discharges the field by producing a shitload of positrons.) In other words, it is a "dark" form of lightning.

And furthermore, the analogy in naming is pretty good: dark matter is also a mysterious and poorly-understood form of matter whose primary salient characteristic is that - in contrast to all other matter in a galaxy, which is directly correlated with light emission because it's mostly found in stars - it does not emit light.

And like dark matter, we only suspect it exists because of unexpected observations (namely, the discovery of gamma rays and shitloads of positrons inside of lightning storms) which would otherwise have no good explanation. Again, the analogy is pretty solid.

"Dark lightning" seems like an entirely reasonable name in this case.

Dark photons only come in undetectable pairs. From an excellent beer-reviewed troll paper:

"We infer that the EM drive expels photons in pairs where the two co-propagate with 180 degree

So is there a cheap way to detect this on a flight? There exist cheap gamma ray sensors for use in cellphones, they aren't rated for large amounts of gamma rays but they are very sensitive
