Is there a downside to using volcanoes as an energy source?

The locals don't let you do it because of "muh property/life"

Yes, because a pound of lava weighs twice as much when it cools.
Conditions are pretty extreme, and tools often break down because of that. Also, there's issues in finding magma wells, and in the danger that comes with it; it's possible to drill into a high pressure steam zone and can cause even more problems.

Plus, geothermal energy is already a thing, just not in literal hell.
