been reading security engineering by ross anderson, wanted to know whats a solid way to start applying the theory? (sites, projects, shit to hack, etc)

Bump, I am in the same boat. Though, white hat, of course, all legal.
>>
>>8538751
quickly browsed through a couple of chapters, it looks to me like there's nearly no substance to any of the topics here
so my suggestion is to pick one of the chapters that most interested you and then go and buy a book about that

>Interested in hacking.
>Buying a book.
>Buying in 2016.
Riiiiiiight.
>>
xd
>>
>>8538765
most graduate texts pull this kind of bullshit so i assumed it was industry standard, but ill try that instead
>>
>>8538776
You do know expecting anything more than vagueness from a 'white hat' source is akin to asking:
>Why doesn't my chemistry book give me detailed instructions for cooking meth?
>>
>>8538792
have any suggestions for a good black hat source

- Learn to use at least one unix/unix-like system. I recommend something like Ubuntu/Debian/Arch instead of a *BSD. Don't just boot kali and meme over it if you're serious.
- Learn C and Assembly for your platform (most likely x86 and x64). You'll need them if you want to write exploits, shellcode and if you want to know why certain vulnerabilities are possible.
- Get the CEH course from torrent (all the slides + software).
- Play wargames like: http://overthewire.org/wargames/
- Beginner reverse engineering: https://beginners.re/
- Learn to Google. Information gathering is the key to hacking. Realize that google matches words and doesn't answer motherfucking questions.
- Something like Project Euler is also useful for improving mathematical and programming skills.
- http://wiki.osdev.org/Main_Page is also helpful.

You can use http://gen.lib.rus.ec/ and http://bookzz.org/ for books. Genlib has links to bookzz.

There are other resources, just Google.

Anyway the long road to true mastery isn't a how to or tutorial. It's knowledge you acquire by yourself for yourself, it's the knowledge of understanding how and why things happen.

PS: If you got specifics I could answer. Keep in mind though that I'm merely a computer engineer with broad knowledge and interests in hacking. I'm no master hacker or reverser (or I'm not telling you).

Thank you, anon, that's very on point.
>>

I'm throwing out a line to keep anonymous contact as you seem knowledgeable.

That's an IT book

>A good list, but anaemic.
What do you mean by that?
>>
>>8539015
This pretty much.
I might also suggest reading "Hacking: The Art of Exploitation", great introduction to the subject.
also crackmes.de, though it is down atm because legal shit, but they'll come back.
wargames are possibly the best way of learning, though they may be HARD at times.
also pwnable.kr is a great site for that.
Am I missing something? oh yeah, gdb is a must-use tool. And learn about some of the nifty unix tools such as xxd, hex editors, and stuff like nmap, tcpdump, those are some of the essential tools of the hacker (always depending on the job you're doing, should go without saying).
Oh, and learn about the network protocols, for getting started there is a book called cnp3 (Gogl it) and for a comprehensive reference there is TCP/IP Illustrated.
