Fusion power research is objectively a waste of money, resources and time because it will never be cost-competitive with fission, let alone other energy sources.

The only viable long-term use for fusion is maybe a space colony around Neptune where heavy uranics simply cannot be found compared to lithium and deuterium.

The only reason people here like fusion is because it's "cool science XD" and they are kids who can't into cost-benefit analysis.

How do we put a stop to the fusion meme, /sci/?

We don't know that, you don't know that, not unless we try.
We're not talking about some obscure physics defying perpetual motion emdrive crackpot machine here.
There is an actual possibility here, it warrants resources imho.
>>
>>8525128
It doesnt need insane amounts of water to cool, is actually completely controllable, doesnt produce radioactive waste or material you can build weapons of mass destruction of, and one day could be the perfect enginge for an interstellar spaceship.

If the technology worked and you got more energy out than you put in there would be no stopping it. Fusion reactors are always 10 years away and always will be.
>>
>>8525327
Thats because there is no proper funding. Once spaceage is here the need for much better engines will come and suddenly fusion reactors will become very, very interesting.
>>
>>8525327
>If the technology worked
But nuclear fussion is a real thing anon. Try looking for a big ball of plasma in the sky on a clear day.

Fusion's greatest achievement is in proving the failings of capitalism

No free market venture will invest in scientific research that doesn't offer short-to-medium term profits

Instead it's left to the state to fund real blue sky science like fusion. If we were in wartime maybe things would be different?
>>
>>8525327
>if you got more energy out than you put in there would be no stopping it
This happens all the time.. it's called chemistry. The universe already did the heavy lifting by creating elements. You are using less energy to create the reaction than is released during the reaction. Not defying the laws of conservation.

taxes. what is your point?

... is a perfectly valid reason.

We'll never get commercially-viable energy from the LHC or the ISS either.

the ISS shouldn't exist

USSR didnt build fusion reactors either, and neither are the chinese.

But we can scare the ayyliens up there.
>>
>>8525497
My point is government funding indirectly relies on viable short/medium term profit.
They just have lots of it because they can pool from corporations all over the world.

It would be a lot harder to fund something like this with private investment.

Fusion is the future.

Just drop a fusion bomb in an enclosed lake and harvest the energy of the waves.

Voila, fusion engine.

you mean the hydrogen bomb?

I would tell you how, but everytime somebody spreads he dies...
>>
>>8525128
Once we cross this threshold, we can turn our attention to the real future: streamlining energy consumption, harnessing cosmic and stellar radiation, and interstellar travel
>>
>>8525170
People need to embrace fission. It's the safest form of power and everyone's scared of it
>>
>>8529920
I like it where it is, far away in the sun. H bombs are not safe and should be kept away from children.
>>
>>8525128
>Fusion power research is objectively a waste of money, resources and time because it will never be cost-competitive with fission, let alone other energy sources.

This is incorrect, you are assuming that the only possible application for fusion power is in base load power generation, which is not the case.

Since a fusion power-plant fuses light elements (hydrogen), it is possible to make a fusion power-plant that has a lower mass than an equivalent output fission reactor, thus enabling the use of nuclear fusion as a form of aircraft or spacecraft propulsion.

Coupled with the fact that hydrogen comprises the vast majority of the observable mass in the universe, means that Fusion power will have more fuel than fission power, until the heat death of the universe, some quatrillions of years from now.
>>
>>8525475
there are tons of very expensive research programs by private companies.

The free market however doesn't WASTE MONEY in bureaucratic makework like government does.
>>

>Since a fusion power-plant fuses light elements (hydrogen), it is possible to make a fusion power-plant that has a lower mass than an equivalent output fission reactor, thus enabling the use of nuclear fusion as a form of aircraft or spacecraft propulsion.
Good luck shielding those neutrons and secondary gammas.
>>
>>8525128
Fusion is the next step. Even if it never has a practical benefit, the ability to study and understand fusion systems will unlock new technologies.
>>
>>8529359

why stop there?

we could ponit a lot of solar cells at the blast direction to absob the energy in form of light and why stop there we sorround ground zero with wind mills to havest the shockwaves. Why stop there? we could build a geothermal reactor at ground zero so we basically just drop the hydrogen-bomb on it so we can maximize the heat.
and as cream a la crop we can use what you implied, exactly!! we can use hydro to get those sweet waves.

it does. Granted they're all short lived and much smaller amounts
