All genetics majors or people simply interested are invited. Food for thought: If humans differ by Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms and these occur at a much greater frequency than random mutations, how many possible SNP combinations are there for humans in general?
>>8503728
There are as many "possible" SNPs as there are bases within the 'standard' human genome x4. Good luck figuring out the possible viable SNP combinations, mate.
Also, why does /sci/ hate genetics? I get the hate for biology, what with all the bullshit "field" scientists, but genetics, epigenetics, etc. certainly are much more legitimate?

I don't agree with this, there are nucleotides which cannot change, especially those which confer to the active sites of essential proteins such as ribosomal subunits (I know nonsense mutations, but certain enzymes have a higher affinity to only a certain codon variant of an amino acid)
So if I had to guess it would be the genome minus a few thousand bases

Hence why I mentioned the viable SNPs. If we're talking purely theoretical, any point is a possible SNP.

oh shit I skimmed over that
ya you're right

>/sci/ hate genetics
SJWtards are not any part of /sci/
>>8503798
/sci/ considers anything biology-related to be absolute garbage, so naturally it's sub-fields are treated the same way.
>>8503941
Sorry I didn't clarify: I meant apart from the rigid consensus sequences that almost never vary, and apart from junk DNA

You guys must be living in the past year. Thanks to all the popsci shit recognition about immortality and genetic engineering, /sci/ has stopped hating on biology. The reason you don't see many threads is because actual threads that ask meaningful questions get solved quickly (and because meme threads about EMdrives, HS math, evolution and philosophy are easier to make).
How viable/difficult are genetic counseling master programs? Is it worth it to be a genetic counselor? What are some other careers related to genetics that only require a masters and are fun/pay well? Thanks
>>8505378
I want to know this as well
Any geneticists here? What do you actually on your research?

It's an artificially constrained program in most universities, making it viable till they open the floodgates. However, this means that, right now, it's harder than most med schools. Also, if you're a guy and get in you'll be worshipped.

I'm in the same spot as you. Go into epigenetics, so you'll be able to ride the popsci funding wave once you're done with your PhD
>>8503971
neither are you, stormfaggot
When will we start getting commercially viable genetic engineering services?
