High tide or even a tsunami can generate flood plains... if it's a common occurrence, you can get straight up tide-dominated deltas and/or estuaries
gypsy moths
The equilibrium in the ecosystem has been disrupted which can sometimes lead to drastic difficult to predict changes. It can be avoided by diversifying the species of trees in the region.

Gotta explain why the rocks in that area were more subject to erosion than the adjacent highlands. The Narraganset Basin is filled with lightly metamorphosed rocks that are softer than the neighboring metamorphic and igneous rocks. The rifting that formed the basin starting nearly 400 million years ago, predating the breakup of Pangea, instead being associated with the breakup of the previous supercontinent.
Fun fact: there's a decent sized coal field in the Narraganset Basin.
