Conversions are fundamentally important to all science, not just chemistry. They are the basic tools that permit you to do any cool shit later on. These conversions need to be second nature to you to have a perceptible grasp of the world around you. The reason why I stuck with chemistry as a major was that it allowed me to see the world for what it really is. Understanding the relation between quantities and units is a critical part of that process.
