Probability and Thermodynamics.

Depends on the level. You could study it with
>Classical mechanics
>Probability
>Thermodynamics

But that'll only take you so far, you'll also need quantum mechanics.
>>
Bumping for this. Any good references or starting point for a beginner?

Thermo and quantum are good co-requisites for this. Understand some general probability beforehand. Know basic things like calculating uncertainties and averages/rms in various situations and be familiar with different types of probability distributions.

I'm taking stat mech next semester so I can't say for sure what specific things would be useful since I haven't really seen it yet but these are the stats I've done in classes leading up to stat mech. Hope this helps at all.

Thanks for this anon. I'd really look into it. Can you recommend some book for starting out?

The only thermodynamics I know is the one I learned fromy introductory physics course. Is it good enough?
>>
>>8494085
look here it is course PHYS 140A. Statistical and Thermal Physics I
http://www.ucsd.edu/catalog/courses/PHYS.html

You need quite a bit of stuff for this material; senior level material..
>>
>>8496172
No you need the upper division thermo physics course.
>>
>>8496172
You need to know thermodynamic potentials.
>>

Probably.
