I don't know why I was under the impression that the death of a star was never seen in recent history because they were so rare. Thought I read it on one of Hawkins books.

A supernova hasn't been observed in the Milky Way in living history, the last one was observed was 400 years ago just before the invention of the telescope. A supernova did occur in the Large Magellanic Cloud in 1987, this is a satellite galaxy of the milky way.

The event was recorded in contemporary Chinese astronomy, and references to it are also found in a later (13th-century) Japanese document, and in a document from the Arab world. Furthermore, there are a number of proposed, but doubtful, references from European sources recorded in the 15th century
