how did mathematics go from basic addition and subtraction to abstract structures in multiple dimensions/spaces with notions of infinity/greater-than-infinity slapped all over the place?

You can thank Galois and the early 1900s revolution in formal logic and foundational mathematics.

Arithmetic is the most abstract applied math. Everything beyond that is just useless. We made it up because brainlets could try and actually understand arithmetic and we wanted to be more elitist so we started inventing shit out of our asses until literally nothing makes sense, not even to us, but because we know a little ser theory we can pretend we do but actually symboñs don't mean anything.

The integral sign is a fucking snake. That is all. Some people say it is S for sum. Lol it is a snake. Newton liked snakes lol. That's all. We draw a snake and then some random numbers, a dx which is a turned xD and then we give each other prizes to pretend we are doing something.

getting to multiple dimensions is easy

if a square has a width of 100, how many squares with a width of 1 do you need to fill the square? you need 100 rows of 100, you can use addition but it would be lengthy 100+100+100+100... so you multiply 100*100=10000, now you're working with 2 dimensions

it is a similar story for the rest of math
