Is he overrated?
>>

Somewhat but hey, you know how /sci/ is

Anyway, i personally think that there isn't a "overrated" scientist since all of them most of the time contribute to society so it's not like your chinese cartoons or the chink gaymen
>>
>>8476991
Yes, Tesla is the most overrated "scientist."
>>
He was a great man, and a great influence to modern day technology. If you are willing to spend some time to research what he has done, you will realise why he is popular.
>>
>>8476991
Overrated as fuck. The internet fawns over him, but most people either can't name a single accomplishment of his or falsely associate him with other people's inventions or with /x/-tier free energy bullshit.

Tesla's popularization has also led to the ridiculous demonizing of Thomas Edison - who was a harsh businessman, to be sure, but nevertheless an engineering genius.

Bottom line - Tesla's primary contributions to science were the invention of the first induction motor and also repeating a whole bunch of experiments other people did first and/or did better. He is not worthy of the absurd fan club he has attracted.

>Is he overrated?
yes, if you're a pop-sci fanboi
A lot of pseudo-scientific bogus /x/ tier BS has been put out there and if you don't have the background it's difficult to separate fact from fiction.
Tesla has been the object of a century old smear campaign to discredit his ideas on EM waves. Turns out 'ol Tesla was right about a few things, things that you won't be taught about the nature of EM waves until you reach antenna theory. Some of his ideas don't fit up with modern theory, for instance he didn't believe in einstein's e=mc2.
But if you study the engineering behind rotating electrical machines to any great depth you'll begin to understand the level of his genius. Tesla's designs for rotating electrical machines are still in use to this very day. Advances in materials have led to some improvements, but the basic design ideas and the engineering of the electrical and magnetic ebb and flows are still exactly as Tesla originally designed over 100 years ago.
We use 3Φ for industrial power worldwide because nobody has come up with a better distribution system yet.
And if you study electrical engineering to the level you understand what a dispersion relationship is for an antenna and a particular frequency of electrical energy you'll find that Tesla's ideas on wireless transmission of power were correct. That EM waves can appear in forms other than the traditionally described transverse wave.

>consensus
haw, as if there ever was any kind of consensus here.
>>
>>8477269
Same here. Tesla is overrated because of some of his crazy ideas such as the death ray or preputial energy. Went to school for electrical engineering, so some his more complex ideas that came to be is what he should be know for. Tesla was a genius for his time for what he understood about EM.
>>
Retard=Retard.

This is a pointless question. Someone who did nothing is nothing.

Any sources or are you kids being contrarian little shits?

>If you are willing to spend some time to research what he has done
>read some Wikipedia articles and a few crank websites
>research
>>
>>8476991
For non-scientists and /scifags, yes he is overrated since they fail to understand what he accomplished and only focus on the sci-pop things like the death-ray, the teleporter and other things he worked on.

For electrical engineers and scientists in that field, he is more or less the founder of the current electrical technology and by now way overrated.
>>
>>8476991
If you go by schoolbooks, he is highly underrated. He invented so much more of technology we use today, based on his inventions, than just alternating current.
But, history books not depicting how it really was? What else is new?

Nikola Tesla was humble and awesome. Edison was a hack.
>>
>>8476991
he is overrated only by those that never studied him and read about him on wiki.

if you actually study his field, you would come to the conclussion that he is very underrated for what he has acomplished. In layman terms, his inventions are the basis of the todays technology.

making a radio controlled boat and demonstrating it on New York's central park's pond well over 100 years ago is more than you'll ever do in your life anon.
