Serious question:
How could you use virtual reality to solve mathematical problems?

Simulate synesthesia
what mathematical problems....

Probably some sort of infinite blackboard with Wolfram Alpha built in

First off, half the problems I've worked on would be so much faster if I could display what's going on in my mind right there so I could see it all, without having to write down everything. I'd also be able to graph everything much easier.
Secondly, when it comes to much more complicated problems, you could use it to aid you while writing everything down, so it would be rather close to having a computer in your brain. As VR and AI (not in the meme sense, more of a machine learning and self modifying code sort of way) get more advances, you'd get closer to quicker computation. Unfortunately, you still need inspiration and actual ideas to solve those problems, as the computation isn't always the main issue. You'd be slightly more likely to get more insight now that you can see everything much easier, but in case you haven't noticed, most incredible math and science advances were done without the aid of a computer, so VR likely won't be used for solving theory problems as it would for programming, design, and your calc II homework.

I have this hammer.. but im not sure how to hit this particular nail with it \thread

No, you would only be virtually solving them.

This would probably be more useful than using VR.
I don't know what you're going for, VR with an objective purpose is essentially just a calculator with extra steps
