I'm so confused can someone help me with this? The first molecule is the starting molecule and the molecule underneath is what you should get as an answer for the hydrolysis reaction. I don't really understand why it shouldn't be the second picture I posted?

this is the answer I keep getting
>>
It's probably done in basic conditions
>>
I can't figure out why a hydrogen is used up after hydrolysis
>>
>>8445372
is it because the hydrogen releases energy during hydrolysis?

sorry I'm simple minded so can u explain it in text?

1. Hydroxide loves electrophilic carbon.
2. 2 is 1+1
3. Pi bond is broken. This pushes the electrons from pi bond to oxygen (look at you HOMO and LUMO to find out why).
4. Oxygen hates being anion, it wants pi bond back.
5. Pi bond reforms as alkoxide leaves.
6. RO- is super basic, look at it's pKa. It wants proton.
7. RO- finds proton
8. RO- wants proton
9. RO- devours proton
10. That's why your picture is wrong. The carboxylic acid should be deprotonated.

thanks!
>>
>>8445392
wait where did u get the hydroxide from? Nearby water molecule?
>>
>>8445404
The reaction is being performed under basic conditions. Yeah.
>>
>>8445405
ooohhhh thanks a lot
>>
I never understood why people have such problems with protons and counterions. Who cares whether something is protonated or not?
