What's the biggest outburst you've seen a professor give? I've never seen an instructor in college yell but ironically when I was in elementary school our second grade teacher screamed really loud at the class because we were all fucking around and making a big mess. We were only about 8 years old. He got fired that day and the next day we had a new teacher. I've been thinking about what being a professor of calculus at a small city college is going to be like and I'm really set on a very clear and patient teaching style with the occasional joke.
>>
My professor farted one time lol
>>
>>8402869
The one that taught 4000-level stats would go on twenty-minute rants about whatever he felt like complaining about (soccer, Americans, students, Star Trek, Americans, and so on). The guy was a walking caricature.
>>
>>8402869
i remember this one black math teacher i had in 2 or 3 grade who told this kid to stfu really loud a couple times
>>
>>8402869
We had a tough guy autistic dean who thought he was hot shit. Horrible stories about him everywhere, a professor once told me that he once stopped by him during heavy rain, rolled down the window and said "oh it's just you, I wanted to give a colleague a lift but you'd dirty my car", it doesn't translate that well into English. Anyway one day the dean had a retarded outburst at some senior student and told him that he would kick his ass were they not on university ground. The guy lifted him up and carried him out. The dean just went back, absolute pussy. I hear that like 10 professors are still in lawsuits with him for different reasons, he used to not greenlight dissertations of people he didn't like etc. Bad shit.
>>
>>8402869
Not really an outburst, but a teacher called me mediocre when I questioned the definition of a Hamel basis. Not in a mean way, but told me that "abstraction for the sake of abstraction is mediocre" and that I shouldn't fall into such a trap
>>
English professor would come in hung over on mondays and make us make a desk circle and tell him about our weekends. While he drank coffee. He would some times slam his head on the desk.
>>
>>8402903

The absolute madman!

Teaching in college is much different. I've taught little kids and I can tell you it's way more frustrating. If your students are fucking around and not paying attention it's easy to lose your shit.

When you're an instructor in college it is easy to justify the chill course of action in these situations. Half your class is likely on their phones while you're lecturing, three quarters of them are getting a C or lower. Their performance doesn't have a huge bearing on you as an instructor. Each one of them is paying between $500 and $2500 for that class. You are technically teaching adults. If they don't wanna pay attention that's their prerogative. If they can get an A and never show up then good for them.

Anyway sorry for being off-topic. I can't recall any of my professors ever "losing it" or yelling during class. I've definitely seen them in some cranky moods.
>>
My original calc 1 professor was ukranian, and had a total mental breakdown when the donbass thing occurred. Daily rants about Russia and Russians (how they're not human, fuck them, gulags, holodomor etc) until his parents got put in a camp and he really started going off the rails (ie daily rants about jews and other /pol/ faggotry).

And then at the end of this a Russian exchange student accidentally backed into his car, and they had a slav-tier brawl right there in the parking lot. He then took a sabbatical.
>>
The opposite happened to me.

Once, my Calculus professor's huge breasts rubbed against the back of my head and my neck. She had on a thin cloth shirt like the kind that feel like pantyhose. She may or may not have had a bra on but her breasts felt SO soft against the back of my head and my neck. She stood there for a good 15 seconds passing out and receiving syllabi and her smell was a very beautiful and pleasant perfume. Best feeling ever. I got a mild erection wet with precum and I came slightly. She was either Hungarian or Ukranian I don't remember. She had a very crisp beautiful accent that felt like she was whispering something very arousing into my ear. I wanted to fuck her. I want to fuck her. Best.

High school math teacher here.
Can confirm.
Also, here is a preemptive fuck you to those who would reply to my post since every time I post about being a math teacher you fuck-lords make some nasty comment. Literally Kys.

I had a professor that would yell at us daily in 4000 mechanics at how shit we were.

My highschool Chem teacher had a phd and taught the college Chem class I took during regular school hours. I used a laptop then, sitting in the front row with the cord plugged in so he constantly had to walk over it.

One day I was emulating sonic 3 and saved myself on a blue sphere level by making several frame perfect jumps over red spheres in a row.
Since I was in front, the whole class could see and went ape shit over it.
The teacher lost it and kicked my laptop screen, unplugging it and knocking it over.

I deserved it. He was a good guy.

The biggest outburst I've ever witnessed university professors deliver was in a joint-course about the 20th-century world history of socialism (read: tried communism, yes, communism is-so the thing that was tried) as jointly taught by two professors. One professor was specialized in Chinese society and modern Chinese culture, while the other professor was specialized in 19th-20th century European history.

The content of the course included various history readings about Stalinsm, the Cultural Revolution, and so on. One assigned reading was Mao's little red book, the one thing I can recall reading from the class, and I took it upon myself to summarize the book on Wikipedia, which edit still stands mostly unchanged to this very day, over ten years later. I published same to the class and I think that this must have influenced the professors' decision about my grade (read on). Maybe it was for that or something else, but I specifically remember being awarded a small "Mao" trinket by the white Chinese specialist, for either that or something else of value that I had done in the course.

Anyway I show up to lecture one day and both guys know that somone (not me) has plagarized. They go off on this full thirty-minute tag team rant about THIS PERSON IS IN THE ROOM AND THEY KNOW IT, and basically it's two academics, and now that I'm older the irony is how academics are perverts and weirdos and so on, but their code is YOU DO NOT FUCKING PLAGARIZE. And that was hammered home here. The two of them apologized to the rest after the tirade, but they made clear that this was a good life lesson for the group. They had caught someone using the software of the day.

For my part, I was not the plagarist (I knew better than that), but I was at a low ebb and just plain not showing up to class. I think I just plain blew off the last two-thirds of the class, yet the above efforts merited for me a D-something IIRC (and not being known to the college as a plagarist!)

I was doing an REU. My advisor and I weren't really on the same page, he was more of a concrete combinatorics guy and I'm more into abstract theory stuff. I can't remember what triggered it, I asked him too many questions or came in late one day, and he just blew up. Didn't talk much with him after that, but he let me do my own thing so it wasn't too bad.
>>
>>8402908
What was your complaint exactly? (Of course Hamel bases are secretly isomorphisms with free vector spaces :^)
>>
>>8402908
That statement if true totally annihilates category theory and representation theory.
>>
>>8403593
Both of those subjects have ample practical applications anon. Representation theory is all over physics.
>>
>>8403595
Yes... But both are abstraction for the sake of abstraction.
Especially representation theory.
>>
>>8403597
No, they're not. Mac Lane and Eilenberg invented category theory to solve specific problems in algebraic topology.

Grade school theology teacher. It's funny because the theology teachers were always the worst human beings at the shitty private catholic schools I went to.

Anyway, she was a shit teacher, and was trying to finish this chapter so that we would have a test the next Monday. We all knew that if she didn't finish the chapter, the test wouldn't be on a Monday. So, we got her off-topic, and asked a shit ton of questions throughout class to slow her down. The test gets put off, and we're all happy. Some kids were talking about it in the next class, and the teacher for THAT class waddles over and tells the theology teacher about it.

She comes in screaming at the top of her lungs about how shit and disrespectful we are and on and on for a full few minutes. Then storms out of the room, and knocks over a metal trashcan in the process.

God. I fucking hated those teachers.
>>
I have a professor who gets very excited about the material and yells out the whole lecture every time. You can hear him all the way down the hall. I should wear hearing protection.
>>
>>8403593
He was quoting someone else when he said that, Dieudonne if I remember correctly.
>>8403588
I said that the definition having a finite linear combination instead of a series of infinite basis vectors multiplied by scalars didn't make much sense in infinite dimensional vector spaces. To me it looks more natural to have a sequence be the series of [math]\alpha e_{i}[/math], or the space of continuous functions have a polynomial base for example.

I know I'm wrong, but he didn't really answer why and I figured it wasn't worth the time to keep asking
>>
Never seen much of an outburst in college but in high school I took a French class that got me some college credit through UW. One guy in the class was a bit of a class clown and at some point he addressed the teacher as "ma'am" and she fucking exploded about how rude that was. I still don't get how people can get so angry about "ma'am" or "sir" because I'm from the south and addressing someone like that was basic respect towards an elder.

Lol. You didn't write that post. I did.

I didn't fuck her because I didn't know how. She obviously did though. On another occasion she gave me a brief massage. She was so fucking hot. On top of that her mouth and set of teeth were literally perfect. Perfect mouth and teeth are rare in humans. But when they occur, they make the head and face look really God damn sexy. It enhanced her crisp pronunciation. My dick gets super wet when I think about her. She was fairly short and was usually underdressed. I bet she has a superb cock sucking ability.

But how could I ever have gone about getting her to actually suck my dick whole? How? She probably had a boyfriend and would therefore resist any advances. If I even dared to outright ask her out or ask her if she wants to fuck she would have told the school authorities and I'd be kicked from the school.

He would also tell sexist jokes and say how women needed to have babies so we could have next generations of physicists

I miss his lectures

>>
>>8403597
It's not. Representation theory has applications in physics, group theory, linear algebra, algebraic geometry, etc.
I mean "abstract" literally means "to pull from". You can't abstract in a vacuum. Abstraction always has a motivation, it's always a property that concrete objects share that you want to understand.
>>
My first term of college I had college algebra and the teacher got incredibly butt hurt that the grades of the students were so shit. He went on a long rant about how his favorite student was this chick who was taking 19 credits and working a full time job and had a 4.0. Found out later he had some sort of organ failure and was gonna die soon. Was pretty bad for everyone.

My history prof in highschool found out his antique red army watch got stolen by someone in the class, kicked a small trashcan out of the door out of anger, threw an eraser at the wall, yelled and threatened the whole class to fess up about it, then forced one of the most polite and kind and respectable people in our class to admit she was the one who stole it even though she couldn't have because she was absent from class the day it got stolen. He made her stand outside (she walked out in tears) and said he was going to "make an example of her" and called the campus police over to arrest her, then WALKED TO HER DESK IN FRONT OF ALL OF US AND PUT THE "STOLEN" WATCH INTO HER BACKPACK, while saying that if any of us said anything he would fail us immediately and that we would be "next". The cops came and took her away, then he made us write an essay about why stealing is wrong while he went outside to talk to the police.

A few minutes before the end of class the girl the professor and the police walked in, asked for a round of applause, and explained that the whole thing was staged to teach us about Stalin's purges in soviet Russia.

Swear to God the professor almost got his ass kicked. After he planted evidence all the kids in the class on sports teams (5 football, 3 wrestling, 2 water polo, and the captain of the track team) were developing a plan - in case the prof got physically violent with us - to attack and restrain him while the track team captain sprinted to the office to get help. One of the footballers was 6'5 and about 400lbs.
>>
>>8406836
That's a bit of a stretch. Often people generalize or axiomatize stuff that doesn't need to be generalized or axiomatized. Like take Jordan algebras - people still have basically no idea what they're good for. Yes they axiomatize observables in QM but do they really help us understand QM better? Highly debatable.
>>
Had varied experiences in high school who cares before college kids are faggots so its to be expected.

"Worst" I've seen in college was either a Linear Algebra professor seemingly getting angry when lecturing the class about how all the minority kids were on their phones or couldn't keep their eyes open in the back of the classroom. Just went totally off topic all of a sudden probably because he'd ask people in the back to answer questions when it was clear they weren't paying attention. Then he would end up making things harder for those of us who were paying attention by trying to make it harder on people who would fail the class regardless.

The other week in my fundamentals of algebra class though my professor came in and these cunts next to me were talking as he was about to start lecturing despite the fact they sit in the front god damn row shut the fuck up or move to the back corner.
He asked them if they 'would mind shutting up class is starting' in a rather aggressive way it was great
>>
psych professor I had for a core course yelled at people in the back of the lecture hall to "shut up. this isnt fucking high school"

One of my STEM professors would legitimately think you were retarded if you didnt know the answer to his questions. can be a total elitist prick. I went to his office hours once to get some help understanding one of the concepts and he looked me dead in the eye, paused, and said "do you seriously not know this?". allegedly, the year after I took his course, he told the class he was teaching "if you got under X percent on the test, you should get checked to make sure you arent mentally challenged". not even kidding. He was probably one of the tougher teachers in my major and he was teaching a non-majors course when he said this.

I've had profs raise their voice if there was lots of talking during a lecture and such, and my databases prof is an ass

biggest outburst was from my Discrete Math prof

>be CS undergrad
>takings discrete math
>prof is huge autist, but ok teacher
>prof is doing the birthday problem to illustrate... some concept
>doing it with one of those TI calculator overhead projectors
>manually
>quip that you could make a TI-BASIC program for this pretty easily
>class is full of CS majors who were just given an offhand prompt
>prof is just mindlessly multiplying and whatnot 30 times on the board
>being CS majors unofficial discussion immediately turns to how to write the program
>quiet murmur becomes open discussion
>out of nowhere prof starts yelling
>"THIS IS HOW WE'RE DOING IT, WE'RE NOT WRITING A PROGRAM AND IT WONT TAKE THAT LONG"
>goes back to mindlessly multiplying for the next 6 minutes
>everyone is silent for the rest of class

dude was seriously a huge autist, always wore pants that were way too tight and showed off his balls
but he did know discrete math, and, despite his social skills, was pretty effective
>>
Oh yeah, I forgot one. Two actually.

My high school chem teacher once spazzed at me out of nowhere in an email because I didn't say "Dear Mr. ___" at the beginning. I never laughed at his jokes in class, which I suspect may have contributed to it. Most people thought he was funny but he was sort of a jerk.

Another one was my set theory professor. I wasn't taking the class very seriously since I had already taken a higher-level model theory class (lol). One time I turned in part of an exam on written paper that was maybe a bit messy. I think I might have also turned an assignment late. Anyways, he got really pissed about it. He was a decent professor, it was partly justified I think. Got an A anyways.

>actual lectures are about different engineering design tools (i.e. different ways of writing requirements, brainstorming, etc.), we're assigned to make them for our projects and write reflective essays (pic related being an example)
>some student wrote that the tools (or the way they were being used) were bullshit
>professor goes ballistic for like a half hour, says he'll need to reevaluate our level of maturity

Either the professor is really beholden to the latest fads or I don't belong in engineering.
