When I was in high school, my dad and I bought this one together (pic related). If I were you, I'd save up some more money to get one like this that has more capabilities in terms of locating/tracking celestial objects and optical power in general.
If you're set on getting one in the $600 range, do a lot of research first so you know what kind of results you'll be able to get out of the scope so your expectations aren't unrealistic.
Go on Craigslist.
I got this beaut for $350, including a full set of eyepieces. I'm working on motorizing it right now, which is a fun project.
