Log - log plots based on powers of ten are used to plot the transfer functions of electric circuits. Gain is also typically expressed in logs because then you can add the gains of cascading systems together, rather than multiplying. I don't like the notation, nor the use of base 10 logs, but saying it isn't used is just plain wrong.
