Bullshit. In the old times meat was scarce as FUCK and probably enjoyed only a few times a month if even that. Fish is an exception, but still definitely not eaten every single day, unless you had all of your tribesmen fishing all day long.
The actual answer is fire. Cooking the roots and vegetables lets our body digest them much more efficiently. Our ancestors did not survive on handfuls of berries and grass. In fact, our brain has been this large for about 30.000 years, and the brain hogs up so much of our net energy.
