Healthy interest in nature.
>Mathematician
Autistic obsession with imaginary abstract objects.
I swear if there was a major called "Sonic Adventure", math would suddenly lose three quarters of its students to it. You're all just manchildren wanting to play forever in your own made up world.

stuff in math is only abstract until an application can be found in the real world.
think about the derivative. when calculus was new, the derivative would have been like interuniversal teichmuller theory is today. but today, the derivative is used in your car to tell you how fast you're going. math does its own thing and other fields use those results as a tool.
tl;dr that which is useless now may be useful later. kys op

>that which is useless now may be useful later
Math has always been pretty useless now, I guess they may be useful later for keeping kids as slaves in school, stripping them away from enjoying life and all creativity ..

>when calculus was new, the derivative would have been like interuniversal teichmuller theory
nah, newton pretty much invented differential calculus because he needed it for mechanics.

The more advances on the maths field we have, the more chances physicists and engineers have to discover new kinds of solutions to problems.

abstract objects exist in the universe and are therefore "nature"
