There should be a ground state, Dirac's equation predicts there isn't, this disagrees with experiment. Dirac reasoned around this by assuming that all the negative energy states were already filled, this is called the Dirac Sea. Feynman interpreted the negative energy states as being an electron propagating backwards in time.
