Were they really bipeds, or just glorified chimpanzees and miocene apes?
Fun fact : If we didn't decide to stand up and walk on two feet while evolving, and kept walking on our hands and legs, we wouldn't have most of our health problems today, including prostate, spine problems, increased risk of heart problems, etc...

I get the spinal and bone stuff, but what proof is there for prostate and heart problems?

Main cause of prostate is that whenever you piss standing up, the urine presses against the prostate walls and damages the membrane. Sitting down while peeing won't damage your prostate, as we would have been doing if we didn't stand up in the first place. Prostate is an abnormal problem for humans.
If we had our bodies parallel to the ground, the blood flow would require 4 times less pumping power from the heart. The internal flow would be much easier for the heart to manage, especially when you're over a certain age. But since we stand up, pushing the blood vertically especially to the arteries is a lot more challenging for the heart muscles.
