would you consider him a mathematician?
Why wouldn't we?
>>8266442
He was a logician.....same as why we don't consider Alan Turing a mathematician, he was a computer scientist
>>8266445
He did mathematical logic. He proved shit; same difference.
>>8266445
>we don't consider Alan Turing a mathematician
We don't?
>>8266463
Turing was a computer scientist not a mathematician
>>8266445
>He was a logician
Are geometers not mathematicians as well now? How about analysts?
>same as why we don't consider Alan Turing a mathematician
I don't think there's a soul in the math community who thinks this.

Logic belongs to philosophy hence he was a philosopher.
Fuck pleb autistic math nerds.
He's a mathematician same as Turing
>>8266469
he did a thesis on probability that is well regarded to this day and earned a PHD in mathematics then used formal reasoning to invent a mathematical equivalent of a processor.
fucking triggered jesus 20/10

"Kurt Friedrich Gödel (/ˈkɜrt ˈɡɜːdəl/;[2] German: [ˈkʊɐ̯t ˈɡoːdl̩]; April 28, 1906 – January 14, 1978) was an Austrian, and later American, logician, mathematician, and philosopher." —Wikipedia
"Alan Mathison Turing OBE FRS (/ˈtjʊərJŋ/; 23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954) was a pioneering English computer scientist, mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and theoretical biologist." —Wikipedia
Don't try categorize them, they weren't plebs like you who belong to one field.
What does it matter.
I mean is Feynman a mathematician? He invented a lot of math. And don't get come at me with post-Hilbert rigor, if you're gonna argue like that, then were the Bernoulli mathematicians?
I'd say theoretical computer scientists are mathematics, I consider it a sub-field.
With logic it's harder. I mean during the time of the positivists, it's rather that the logicians came equipped with formal logic and tried to sneak underneath the math foundations.
Gödel did more than logic, he also worked in general relativity, see e.g.

He sure published enough to qualify as a mathematician, but it feel like he's see himself as a pure logician much more. Then again, it's like if he want to claim Tesla for physics only. Well I donno.
