is Von Neumann overrated

what are his math accomplishments?

for example von neumann architecture wasn't really his work (Mauchly and Eckert's work)
>>
>>8245791
he was a fucking genius working in almost every area of math in his time. you can catch a glimpse of it in wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_von_Neumann#Mathematics

the von neumann architecture thing is true though
>>
umm he invented modern game theory

he was, along with dirac, the first to establish a rigorous mathematical basis for quantum mechanics

created, with Ulam, Cellular Automata, the Monte Carlo algorithm

has many accomplishments in set theory, ergodic theory, lattice, operator theory etc.
and although not mathematically related, was the man that created the concept of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) and helped us prevent Nuclear War
>>
>>8245801
>the rest seems irrelevant
fuck off
>>
>>8245802
>fuck off
irrelevant.
>>
>>8245809
don't make a thread asking for something if you're going to answer that it's "irrelevant" you gigantic fucking retard
>>
Nash didn't invent game theory....

most scholars agree that Von Neumann founded the field of game theory in 1928 when he proved the minimax theorem.....it didn't traditionally begin until 1948 when Von Neumann along with Morganstern wrote the Theory of Games book
>>
>>8245811
Please explain what exactly did he bring to "set theory, ergodic theory, lattice, operator theory etc."

Just saying he worked in these areas brings nothing to the table.
>>
>>8245816

Von Neumann made foundational contributions to ergodic theory, in a series of articles published in 1932.[56] Of the 1932 papers on ergodic theory, Paul Halmos writes that even "if von Neumann had never done anything else, they would have been sufficient to guarantee him mathematical immortality".[57] By then von Neumann had already written his famous articles on operator theory, and the application of this work was instrumental in the von Neumann mean ergodic theorem.[57]

wikipedia
>>
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_von_Neumann

just read his wiki page for the doubters?
>>
>>8245820
Right, but do you even know what that even means? What *exactly* has he accomplished in those areas? Or are you just regurgitating wikipedia?
>>
>>8245833 well for example Von Neumann introduced "inner models" to set theory which has become a centerpiece in the study..he also is part of the famous NGB set theory which is an alternative to ZFC set theory
>>
>>8245845
Thanks you. At least someone is trying to answer with some real examples.
Apparently NGB set theory is conservative extension of ZFC. Sounds pretty cool.
>>
>>8245791
>>8245833
Have you done your homework? Did you even searched the web? Would you even be able to understand his work?
>>
>>8245833
you seem to be at a level, where you can't comprehend his achievements, because you're still on undergrad level.
have you taken a functional analysis class before?
would you be able to understand, what this wikipedia page is about?

His general accomplishments included walking around as a potato faced beta virgin.

Other than that he's a hack and has no contributions to math or science whatsoever.
>>
>>8245871
>His general accomplishments included walking around as a potato faced beta virgin.

>walking around
>potato faced
>beta virgin

KEK
where is Johnny!?

"He can count everything except calories" - Klara Von Neumann, his wife

His by far largest accomplishment is that he couldn't stop eating, which lead to his early death.
>>
>>8245791
When computers just emerged and shortly after that people didn't understand why do we need this kind of hungry for electricity machines. So they were talking in terms of very special problems that you can solve with computers.

But von neunmann was interested in universal things, in what computers can do in general, how do you manage them and so on. Now we take it for granted, we are so get used to all basic things about computers but at the time no one could think of all that complexity. Basically he was the inspirer of modern computer science as we know it.
>>
All that math shit is nice, but his real accomplishments were his contributions to Cold War strategy and foreign policy, much of which is still classified to this day.
>>
>>8245996
>monkey games of moving money / weapons around
>real accomplishments
l m a o
>>
>>8246009
>preventing nuclear war between US and the Soviet Union
>not an accomplishment
>>
>>8246032
>managing not to destroy yourself and everyone else
>accomplishment
wow amazing war strategists A++++
>>
Von Neumann is overrated. He was a first-class mathematician and genius, but there were many better mathematicians in 20th century.
>>
>>8246049
Exactly
see
>>8245769
>>
>>8246255

I wouldn't say "many" maybe a few, in terms of pure mathematics...but Von Neumann was much more of an applied guy
>>
VOn Neumann was by no means overrated
>>
Neumann is meme tier. He was hardly smart.

>>8246508

Good old Johnny von-Bomb-All-The-Commies Neumann.
>>
>>8246558
What positive contributions do you bring to this board?
>>
was Von Neumann a communist?
>>
>>8248391
Quite the opposite

Him and Teller were two of the biggest anti-communists you'll ever find
>>
>>8248425
capitalist scum-sucking corporate piece of shit
>>

He made progress in mathematics, physics, computer science, electrical engineering, and even worked on biology in his later life.

It's interesting how Turing also turned his interests at biology in the 50's before his death.
>>
>>8248450
Fuck you, Neumann is literally the last great genius we have had.
>>
>>8248868
I'm not really sure what Neumann did in biology, but Turin did lay some ground works for mathematical biology which we're just today beginning to unravel. His reaction–diffusion theory of morphogenesis is still used today.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chemical_Basis_of_Morphogenesis
>>
>>8248885
I had remembered this completely wrong. Sorry for that.
But he worked on some mathematical analysis of self replication which is used today for DNA replication.

Lol just like how once reddit fell in love with Tesla and sci started hating him the same thing is happening with von Neumann.
>>
>>8248939
Tesla was a meme though
>>
>>8248939
Or maybe people just don't fall for meme-tier people like you do.
>>
da best
>>
People need to stop fantasizing and start aiming to be better than Von Neumann and Dirac. Jesus it's pathetic.
