I think the main thing holding mathematics back is an over-reliance on shitty notation. Instead of describing otherwise simple concepts using plain language, most people in mathematics choose to rely on indecipherable hieroglyphics that offer no insight into their meaning. Nah m8 it's the other way around. English is holding us back yo. "Intuitive" concepts in English are extremely vague, most of the time, making them difficult to work with in math.
